ABOUT US

Choke Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was established in 2004. We are the most traditional BJJ organization in Denmark and the only group that is directly connected to the Gracie Family in Brazil and in the United States. In fact, when the Gracies come to Scandinavia they usually train and teach at our schools.

We have two schools - Copenhagen & Århus - and over 700 members.

Our founder and head instructor is Professor Joao Pedro Santos, who is a third degree black belt under 8th degree Carlson Gracie disciple Sergio "Bolao" Souza.

The name Choke is short, strong and relates directly to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. According to Grand Master Helio Gracie, it is also the most powerful move in Jiu-Jitsu . It was suggested by Morten Pedersen, one of our first students.

Our logo is evidently based on the traditional Gracie Academy logo that's been used in Brazil for almost a century. There are three equilateral triangles inside the circle. They represent balance and connection to our roots.

Choke dominates Roskilde Open

Chokeman

Our team entered the Roskilde Open of BJJ on May 25. We took 13 students and won 19 medals (7 gold, 6 silver, 6 bronze), scoring more points than the second and third best teams combined. This was a nice small event that gave everyone an opportunity to test their skills in a friendly and competitive environment.

Choke BJJ Team at the Roskilde Open 2013

Our three blue belt fighters won their divisions. Marcus Dahl Rasmussen won the 76kg class against two very tough and experienced opponents. Mugtaba Sirelkhatim, fresh off great performances at the Danish Open, won the 82kg class with two quick armlock submissions. Among the heavyweights, Jesper Bendtsen won the 94kg class with a strong top game and lots of pressure.

Marcus Dahl Rasmussen in the absolute class

In the white belt division, Immo Söllner won the 100kg class dominating all his matches. Mikkel Bukholt Nielsen, one of our most active competitors, won the 76kg class. Ehsan Faizzad, the current Danish Open champion, took silver in the 70kg. Peter Keller Hansen, a Karate instructor entering his first BJJ competition, showed a very versatile game on his way to the 88kg title.

The Choke Girls also represented very well and won four medals for our team. Larissa Cacau won her weight class and took bronze in the absolute. Current Danish Open champion Borislava Kyurkchieva got silver in her weight and finished one girl in the absolute class with her trademark sleeve choke.

Borislava and Larissa go at it

Despite the great showing in the weight classes, our team let the absolute titles slip away by very little. Among blue belts,  Marcus finished his first match and lost the semifinal by points in a back and forth match. His opponent resisted a tight footlock and had to withdraw from the competition after the match was over. Muggy and Bendtsen faced the eventual champion and lost by points is very competitive matches. In the white belt absolute, we got second (Immo), third (Ehsan) and fourth (Khaibar Amanulla) places. In the masters division, Peter Keller Hansen took silver.

 Other Results (White Belt):
Troels Mygind-Klausen - 82kg silver
Khaibar Amanulla - 70kg bronze
Petyo Bozhinov - 64kg silver
Maria Dahl Rasmussen - 69kg bronze
Camilo Mercado - 76kg bronze

Thanks to the support crew: Rune, Helle, Franck Biohack & Family, Steffen, etc. And big props to Martin and Matt who took photos and filmed all our matches!
