ABOUT US

Choke Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was established in 2004. We are the most traditional BJJ organization in Denmark and the only group that is directly connected to the Gracie Family in Brazil and in the United States. In fact, when the Gracies come to Scandinavia they usually train and teach at our schools.

We have two schools - Copenhagen & Århus - and over 700 members.

Our founder and head instructor is Professor Joao Pedro Santos, who is a third degree black belt under 8th degree Carlson Gracie disciple Sergio "Bolao" Souza.

The name Choke is short, strong and relates directly to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. According to Grand Master Helio Gracie, it is also the most powerful move in Jiu-Jitsu . It was suggested by Morten Pedersen, one of our first students.

Our logo is evidently based on the traditional Gracie Academy logo that's been used in Brazil for almost a century. There are three equilateral triangles inside the circle. They represent balance and connection to our roots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to train at Choke?
Each Choke school charges a different membership fee and we do not disclose our prices on the site or via email. We encourage all potential new students to book a free intro class so you get to see the school and experience our methods first hand. After the intro class, our instructors will be happy to provide membership information. We can assure you it is very affordable and a great investment.

I already have some BJJ or grappling experience. Can I skip the Intro Class and join one of the regular classes?
All new students must first attend the free Intro Class before they can join the school. You can read more about our Intro Class here.

Is it ok if I cannot attend every class? Do I need to confirm/cancel in advance?
Our training schedule is meant to give students as many options as possible to come to the gym. You can come as little or as much as you want or can. Typically the average student attends two classes per week. You do not need to confirm/cancel in advance. Just show up!

How often do you train without the gi?
Our training programs focus on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training with the gi. However we do have nogi sessions during the summer. Advanced students also get to train without the gi when they are preparing for grappling competitions.

What training equipment do I need in order to start BJJ at Choke?
The mandatory equipment consists of 1x all-white or all-blue Jiu-Jitsu gi (uniform), 1x white belt, a pair of clean sandals to wear inside the dojo and a water bottle. Additionally you may also want to consider buying rashguard, mouthguard, earguard and kneepads.

Where can I order the official Choke gis?
The online shop ChokeSports.com supplies the official Choke gis with patches. Contact your local instructor for more information and student discounts.

I will be in town for a short period and would like to visit the school to train. How should I proceed?
You are most welcome to visit our school. We receive out of town guests very often. Before you show up, please make sure to contact the local school to set a date and find out our drop-in fee.

In what language are classes taught?
Choke schools in Denmark offer instruction in Danish and in English. We have a very international atmosphere, hence the classes in English.

What is the minimum/maximum age to start training at Choke?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that can be practiced by people of literally all ages. In Copenhagen our Kids Program starts at 5 years of age. The minimum age to join our adult program is 15. At the moment our oldest student is more than 60.
