ABOUT US

Choke Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was established in 2004. We are the most traditional BJJ organization in Denmark and the only group that is directly connected to the Gracie Family in Brazil and in the United States. In fact, when the Gracies come to Scandinavia they usually train and teach at our schools.

We have two schools - Copenhagen & Århus - and over 700 members.

Our founder and head instructor is Professor Joao Pedro Santos, who is a third degree black belt under 8th degree Carlson Gracie disciple Sergio "Bolao" Souza.

The name Choke is short, strong and relates directly to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. According to Grand Master Helio Gracie, it is also the most powerful move in Jiu-Jitsu . It was suggested by Morten Pedersen, one of our first students.

Our logo is evidently based on the traditional Gracie Academy logo that's been used in Brazil for almost a century. There are three equilateral triangles inside the circle. They represent balance and connection to our roots.

Choke Team in Rome

Chokeman

In the end of June our team traveled to Rome to attend the IBJJF's inaugural event in the Italian capital. We had four students enter the competition. Jesper Bendtsen took the silver medal in the blue belt heavyweight masters division. A couple of seconds more and he would have scored the points to win gold. In the absolute division he was eliminated in the quarter finals after having faced the same opponents again.

Marcus Dahl Rasmussen signed up for both the Gi and Nogi events. On Saturday, with the Gi, he quickly choked his first opponent but was defeated in the second round in a match he was leading from the start. He came back on Sunday (Nogi) more determined only to find out that he was +1kg over weight. After a lot of sprinting and sacrifice he managed to make weight just before being called for the first match. He choked his first two opponents in under two minutes but lost in the quarter finals 4x0 against the eventual divisional champion.

One of the savages from Choke Århus, Mugtaba Sirelkhatim entered his first major event in Rome. He had a very good showing... while there was gas in tank. After passing guard, taking the back and sinking a very tight choke in the first minute of the match, Muggy gassed out and allowed his opponent - one of the toughest names in the blue belt division - to recover.

Our biohacked student Franck Hedeøj decided to test the waters after only a few months of training. He showed good gamesmanship and acrobatic takedown defense but was defeated by a more experienced opponent.

Off the mats our support crew included coach Joao Pedro Santos, Michael Maquina Krag, Jean-baptiste JB and Pia Damgaard. We had a great time with lots of fun experiences that brought us even closer together. We will be back next year for sure: stronger and hungrier than ever - for medals, pasta and, why not, gelato!
