ABOUT US

Choke Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was established in 2004. We are the most traditional BJJ organization in Denmark and the only group that is directly connected to the Gracie Family in Brazil and in the United States. In fact, when the Gracies come to Scandinavia they usually train and teach at our schools.

We have two schools - Copenhagen & Århus - and over 700 members.

Our founder and head instructor is Professor Joao Pedro Santos, who is a third degree black belt under 8th degree Carlson Gracie disciple Sergio "Bolao" Souza.

The name Choke is short, strong and relates directly to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. According to Grand Master Helio Gracie, it is also the most powerful move in Jiu-Jitsu . It was suggested by Morten Pedersen, one of our first students.

Our logo is evidently based on the traditional Gracie Academy logo that's been used in Brazil for almost a century. There are three equilateral triangles inside the circle. They represent balance and connection to our roots.

IBJJF Copenhagen Open 2014

Chokeman

Last weekend BJJ history was made in Denmark as the country hosted Scandinavia's first ever official tournament sanctioned by the IBJJF. The event took place at the beautiful Østerbro Idrætshuset right in the center of the city during the weekend May 4-5.

Choke's head instructor Joao Pedro Santos and his wife Kamille Santos were responsible for putting the event together and the results are very positive. We attracted almost 500 competitors from all over the world including some well known names such as Braulio Estima, Alan Finfou and Alberto Crane, among many others.

The Choke Team came to fight and won medals in some very competitive divisions:

DAY 1
Jesper Bendtsen takes two medals home: silver in the blue belt adult absolute after four fights where he choked two opponents and never had any point scored against him. He lost the final 2x1 in advantages. He al
so got third place in the 94kg class despite dislocating his semifinal opponent's shoulder with the standing lock we practiced last week.
Mugtaba Sirelkhatim took silver in the blue belt adult 88kg class and reached the quarterfinals of the absolute where he was eliminated by the eventual champion in a match he was dominating until the last 30 seconds.
Marcus Rasmussen and Morten Lindgren were eliminated in the first round.

DAY 2
Johannes Riesinger wins the white belt adult 94kg division. After a dominant first match, he faced a very game opponent in the final. He survived a triangle for a couple of minutes before he could escape, pa
ss, mount and finish with a keylock.
In the white belt master 76kg, teammates Christian Christoffersen and Franck Hedehøj reached the final after very competitive matches against a Brazilian opponent. Christian took the gold by judge's decision.
Danny Pedersen and Jonas Kose were both eliminated in the first round but showed strong will and good technique. In the nogi event, Marcus Rasmussen submitted his first opponent with a RNC but was then caught in a very tight footlock in his second match. He lost to the eventual division champion.
